A GOP Congressman and combat veteran who served as chair of the Homeland Security Committee has officially submitted his resignation from Congress, effective July 20.

U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN) delayed his departure to secure passage of President Trump’s border security bill, demonstrating his commitment to ending the border crisis before pursuing private sector opportunities.

This staunch conservative’s exit marks the end of an impactful political career that included leading the successful impeachment of Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary.

Green initially announced his retirement earlier but was persuaded to return to politics after encouragement from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump himself.

After winning re-election in November against Democrat Megan Barry, Green has now submitted his resignation letter, formally ending his congressional service that began in 2019.

The congressman, who represented Tennessee’s 7th District covering multiple counties, including Cheatham, Dickson, and parts of Davidson, made border security a cornerstone of his congressional service.

Green ensured his final vote in Congress supported Trump’s comprehensive border legislation, which he proudly described as “the one Big Beautiful Bill.”

At the same time, the representative’s political accomplishments include leading the impeachment effort against former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, whom the House successfully impeached on February 13, 2024.

This historic achievement marked the first impeachment of a cabinet secretary in nearly 150 years, holding the Biden administration accountable for the border crisis.

“My time here started with a fire to serve veterans, it continued with leading the historic impeachment of a cabinet secretary, and now it ends with achieving real border security. I am grateful my last vote was for the one Big Beautiful Bill,” Green said in his departure speech.

Before entering Congress, Green served as a Tennessee state senator from 2013 to 2018.

His background as a combat veteran and ER doctor gave him unique insights into veterans’ issues, healthcare policy, and national security matters.

He has also been urging the Pentagon to investigate toxic exposure at Karshi-Khanabad Air Base that may be linked to illnesses affecting veterans who served there.

In his farewell message, Green expressed gratitude to the constituents who supported him throughout his political career.

He emphasized the trust they placed in him and reflected positively on his time representing their interests in Washington.

Green’s dedication to conservative principles was evident throughout his congressional tenure, where he consistently fought against government overreach and defended constitutional freedoms.

As Homeland Security Committee chair since 2023, he has prioritized protecting America’s borders and strengthening national security against both external and internal threats.

“To my constituents across Tennessee’s 7th District—thank you. The trust you put in me is humbling. I will look back fondly on my years of serving as your voice in Washington,” Green added.

As the former congressman prepares to leave office on July 20, his legacy of service to the country—first as a military veteran, then as a physician, and finally as a dedicated congressman—stands as a testament to conservative leadership that put America first.

His departure creates a void in Congress of strong conservative voices willing to take on the establishment and fight for border security.
