The blast was so powerful that residents initially thought it was an earthquake as their houses shook from the impact.
Over 2,000 residents lost power as the fireworks facility erupted in flames, highlighting yet another catastrophe in the state’s increasingly dangerous summer season.
The fireworks warehouse explosion occurred near County Road 23 and County Road 86A in Esparto, Yolo County, northwest of Sacramento.
Firefighters responded around 5:50 p.m. to find multiple commercial buildings engulfed in flames and numerous explosions continuing to rock the area.
The blast created a massive smoke plume reaching elevations of 10,000 to 15,000 feet, visible for miles around.
The fire quickly spread beyond the facility, causing multiple spot fires and burning approximately 80 acres of surrounding land.
Local authorities issued immediate evacuation orders for residents in the area of the Oakdale Fire, though some were allowed to return by Tuesday night.
Moreover, the evacuation area covered the south side of Highway 16, stretching south to County Road 23 and west from Interstate 505 to County Road 85B.
“We strongly urge everyone to continue avoiding the area for the next several days so that fire crews, law enforcement, and emergency personnel can do their jobs safely and effectively,” the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office stated in a release.
The explosion’s impact extended beyond the immediate facility. Nearly 2,200 PG&E customers lost power, with restoration expected by 1:15 a.m. today.
Fire crews established a safe perimeter around the facility while addressing the numerous spot fires threatening the surrounding communities.

Remarkably, despite the massive scale of the explosion, no injuries have been reported.
The State Fire Marshal has dispatched an arson and bomb investigation team to determine the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.
“The fire will take time to cool, and once it does, explosive experts must safely enter the site to assess and secure the area,” the sheriff’s office stated.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Kara Garrett indicated the facility is owned by an active pyrotechnic license holder, stating:
“This type of incident is very rare, as facilities like this are required to not only follow our stringent California pyrotechnic requirements, but also federal explosive storage requirements.”
This raises questions about whether proper safety measures were in place or if regulations were being properly enforced.
In addition, drones are being utilized to assess the extensive damage as officials continue to investigate the cause of this dramatic explosion just days before the Fourth of July celebrations.
Local authorities have advised residents to avoid the Esparto and Madison areas for several days while emergency operations continue.
