The drones come from Austin-based Mithril Defense, under a program branded Campus Guardian Angel. The company’s pitch is blunt: police often arrive minutes after shots are fired, while many school shootings unfold in under a minute.
The drones are supposed to launch in about five seconds, reach the shooter in around fifteen, and begin degrading or incapacitating the attacker within sixty. That first minute is the battlefield the company wants to own.
What these machines are built to do in a real attack
Once airborne, the drones are flown by licensed human pilots sitting in a tactical operations center in Texas, watching live video feeds from the school.
The aircraft are designed to weave through hallways at speeds of 50 to 60 miles per hour, using sirens, strobe lights, and pepper gel to overwhelm the suspect. As a last resort, the drone itself becomes a weapon, able to ram a shooter at reported speeds up to 60 or even 70 miles per hour.
The devices carry speakers, allowing operators to talk directly to the shooter, guide officers, or warn staff and students. Campus Guardian Angel marketing describes a layered engagement: first loud bangs or air poppers and commands to surrender, then pepper rounds, then kinetic strikes if the attacker keeps shooting.
The company’s stated goal is to keep the shooter occupied and degraded until “authorized responders” arrive to make the actual arrest.
Why some schools and states are willing to test this
School boards in Georgia and Florida are backing multi-hundred-thousand-dollar pilot programs and, in some cases, using state funds to pay for them. Georgia officials say they will place twenty to sixty drones in each of five high schools, housed in boxes of three around the campus.

One report notes there is “zero empirical data” showing these drones reduce casualties compared with standard measures like locked doors and training. That lack of independent proof makes it easy for critics to call students “guinea pigs” in a live experiment.
