The official X profile for 77-year-old Wilson shared that the congressman “was taken ill and is being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, DC.”
His son, Alan Wilson, who serves as South Carolina’s attorney general, also posted on X, stating that he spoke to his mother, who was at the hospital with his father.
He added, “Doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms.”
“I was able to speak with him moments ago and I am incredibly thankful that he is stable and being monitored by medical professionals,” Alan commented.
Moreover, the Congressman became ill while sitting in the front row during a celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day at Ukraine House, located in Washington’s diplomatic area.
The Ukrainian ambassador had just begun her speech when she paused and called for a doctor.
Members of the South Carolina congressional delegation shared their thoughts following their colleague’s hospitalization.
“Praying for a full and speedy recovery for my friend,” Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) said.
Similarly, Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) wrote, “Prayers up for Congressman Wilson and his family tonight.”
Following his overseas visits, Wilson returned home to South Carolina to campaign for his upcoming election against Democrat David Robinson II.
Wilson’s district also encompasses western and central parts of the state, including Lexington and Aiken counties. Wilson has represented a conservative district in South Carolina since 2001.
He gained national attention in 2009 when he famously shouted, “You lie!” at former President Barack Obama during a joint session of Congress.
