Washington State Patrol issued an Amber Alert early this week, in cooperation with the West Richland Police Department, after reports of a man allegedly killing his ex-wife and girlfriend and abducting his 1-year-old son.

Identified as 39-year-old Elias Huizar, the suspect was armed, dangerous, and “on the run.”

During the pursuit on Interstate 5, Huizar, a former Yakima, Washington police officer shot himself in the head. Before the tragic death, Huizar crashed his vehicle and engaged in gunfire with officers.

Despite fleeing the scene, he later stopped several miles south near Coburg, Oregon, where he collided with a commercial vehicle and veered into the median.

Oregon State Police Captain Kyle Kennedy confirmed early Tuesday that the child, 1-year-old Roman Santos, was discovered unharmed in the back seat and safely taken into police custody.

Law enforcement information suggests that Huizar committed a homicide outside William Wiley Elementary School in West Richland, Washington, before eluding capture. Subsequently, a search warrant executed at Huizar’s residence led to the discovery of another woman’s body.

Authorities have desisted from disclosing further details regarding the circumstances of the women’s deaths, including the manner in which they occurred.

Agency spokesperson Yvette Inzunza confirmed that the late police officer, formerly employed by the Yakima Police Department, served from 2013 until his resignation in February 2022.

Huizar left the department following disciplinary action, as per a departmental statement shared on social media.
