A Trump-endorsed outsider just steamrolled the party machine in upstate New York, and the message to establishment Republicans could not be clearer.
Story Snapshot
- Trump-backed businessman Anthony Constantino is projected to defeat establishment favorite Robert Smullen in the NY-21 Republican primary.
- Constantino ran as a self-funded political outsider, closely aligned with President Trump’s agenda and style.
- Smullen had the backing of the New York Republican Party, most county chairs, and much of the congressional delegation.
- The race highlights the ongoing civil war inside the GOP between grassroots Trump voters and party insiders.
Trump’s Chosen Candidate Overpowers the Party Machine
Anthony Constantino, a businessman and political newcomer, is projected to win the Republican primary in New York’s 21st Congressional District, defeating State Assemblyman Robert Smullen despite Smullen’s strong backing from the state Republican Party and local officials.[1][2]
National outlets describe Constantino as a Trump-backed candidate who beat a more traditional Republican in the race to replace Representative Elise Stefanik, who is leaving Congress.[1][2] With most precincts reporting, Constantino held a commanding, double-digit lead.[2]

President Donald Trump endorsed Constantino months before primary day, framing him as a loyal ally who would never “let you down.”[1][3]
Trump highlighted Constantino’s massive “Vote for Trump” sign atop his Sticker Mule headquarters, a sign that drew local controversy but became a symbol of open defiance against anti-Trump pressure.[1][3][6][8]
Trump’s post praised Constantino as a “great supporter” and noted that many of his endorsed primary candidates go on to victory, a pattern that largely held again in this race.[3][20]
A Business Builder, Not a Career Politician
Constantino built his reputation not in Albany backrooms, but in the private sector. He founded Sticker Mule in 2010 and grew it into an international operation with more than 1,000 employees across dozens of countries, including a large workforce in upstate New York.[1][7][8]
Profiles describe Sticker Mule as a fast-growing e-commerce company selling custom stickers, labels, and related products, with about 1,200 workers worldwide.[7][8] That record lets Constantino argue he knows how to create jobs, meet payroll, and fight red tape in the real economy.
On the campaign trail, Constantino pledged to self-fund his race and donate his entire congressional salary to charity, casting his run as “giving back” rather than cashing in.[6][10]
He told voters he wanted to stay independent of lobbyists and party bosses by relying on his own resources rather than special-interest money.[6][10]
For many voters tired of “get rich in Washington” politicians, that message fits with Trump-era demands for leaders who have already built something and are not looking for their first real paycheck from the federal government.
Trump Loyalty vs. GOP Establishment Loyalty
The NY-21 race became a clear test of whether Republican primary voters would side with Trump’s endorsement or with state party insiders rallying behind Smullen.[2][3][5]
Smullen entered the contest with major institutional backing, including support from the New York Republican Party, most county committees, and endorsements from several Republican members of Congress, positioning him as the “safe” choice for the establishment.[2][9]
Media coverage repeatedly framed the race as a fight between a Trump-backed outsider and an establishment conservative with deep ties to party leadership.[2][4][5]
Constantino, by contrast, wrapped himself tightly around the Trump movement and made that contrast the point. Reports note that he not only raised the giant Trump sign, but also presented Trump with a seven-foot bronze statue after the 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, and even produced pro-Trump music.[1][5]
He has also worked with well-known Trump allies such as Rudy Giuliani and Roger Stone, who publicly backed his campaign and emphasized his alignment with the “Make America Great Again” agenda.[3][5]
For grassroots voters who still feel the country is under attack from the left and the permanent bureaucracy, that level of loyalty matters more than party endorsements.
A Warning Shot to Anti-Trump Republicans Nationwide
National analysts describe this primary as part of a wider pattern: when Trump clearly picks a side, his endorsed candidates tend to win Republican primaries, especially when running against figures seen as lukewarm or resistant to his agenda.[3][20][22]
One analysis found that Trump-endorsed candidates won or advanced in dozens of recent Republican primaries, including races in which they challenged other Republicans viewed as part of the old guard.[20][22]
The NY-21 result now joins that list and sends a message to any Republican who thinks they can ignore the Trump base while leaning on party machinery.
Since I know this district and these numbers like the back of my hand…as @Redistrict says “I’ve seen enough”

Congratulations to @constantino on his overwhelming victory in today’s #NY21 Republican primary!
This was a hard fought election and the voters have spoken loudly…

At the same time, some recent races show Trump’s endorsement is not automatic magic, especially when voters see another strong conservative option.[18] But in NY-21, where the choice was starkly cast as Trump’s man versus the insiders’ pick, voters broke toward the outsider businessman.
For those worried about immigration, inflation, high energy costs, and cultural radicalism, the calculus is simple: they want someone who will back Trump’s agenda without flinching, not another go-along-get-along Republican who listens more to Albany than to the North Country.
