(GoRealNewsNow.com) – Amid ongoing violence and a fierce territorial war in the country, a Mexican journalist was brutally killed despite being under police protection.

After the incident, colleagues are speaking out again, seeking answers and justice.

The attack occurred in Celaya, Guanajuato, where Alberto “El Llanero (Ranger)” Martinez Nonguez was targeted and killed.

According to Mexico’s Proceso, Martinez was traveling in a police vehicle with two officers assigned to guard him when gunmen ambushed them.

Police sources said that officers returned fire and managed to fend off the attackers but could not save the reporter, who was hit by a bullet in the head.

Shortly after, Martinez was rushed to a local hospital, but he died soon after. Both officers were injured but are reported to be stable.

Moreover, the journalist was a seasoned crime professional who had been under 24-hour police protection since surviving an assassination attempt in 2022.

At that time, gunmen had tried to kill him as he was leaving his home.

Following that attack, Martinez shifted his focus to covering car accidents and minor crimes.

Proceso noted that he was on his way back from reporting on an auto-pedestrian collision when the attack happened.

On his Facebook page, Martinez’s family shared the news of his death and requested prayers with the message, “Pray for my eternal rest.”

Mexico is still considered one of the most dangerous countries for journalists, despite the government’s claims that violence against news workers has ended under the current administration.

In July, gunmen kidnapped and killed journalist Victor Alfonso Culebro in Chiapas, as reported by Breitbart Texas.
