(GoRealNewsNow.com) – Former Hollywood producer and convicted sexual predator Harvey Weinstein may be on the brink of death as he had to undergo emergency heart surgery after suffering chest pains.
His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, revealed that Weinstein was rushed from Rikers Island Prison to a Manhattan hospital late Sunday.
72-year-old Weinstein is currently at Rikers Island as he waits for a second trial on sex crimes charges.
Aidala claimed his client was moved to Bellevue Hospital after calling his attorneys over the weekend to report “how ill he was.”
Furthermore, Weinstein representatives Craig Rothfeld and Juda Engelmayer said in a statement, “Mr. Weinstein was rushed to Bellevue Hospital last night due to several medical conditions. We can confirm that Mr. Weinstein had a procedure and surgery on his heart today however cannot comment any further than that.”
They continued, “As we have extensively stated before, Mr. Weinstein suffers a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment. We are grateful to the executive team at the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island for acting swiftly in taking him to Bellevue Hospital.”
Aidala also said Weinstein’s private jail consultant, Craig Rothfeld, coordinated with city officials to arrange the transfer to the hospital.
“Luckily, they heeded our emergency calls,” the lawyer noted.
Moreover, Weinstein called Aidala from his hospital bed on Monday morning to inform him that the surgery was about to start.
By late Monday afternoon, Weinstein’s condition was still unclear.
In addition, the emergency surgery comes as Weinstein was scheduled to appear for a pre-trial hearing in Manhattan Supreme Court this week.
Since being brought back to New York City after his sex crimes conviction and 23-year sentence were overturned in April, Weinstein has been transferred multiple times between Bellevue and Rikers’ medical wing.
In May, city officials moved Weinstein back to Rikers after it was revealed that he had been receiving special amenities at Bellevue, including a phone, a private bathroom, and a television.
