The pre-dawn blast destroyed three homes completely and damaged several others in the Nicetown area in Philadelphia, raising questions about infrastructure safety in the city’s aging residential areas.

Federal investigators have joined local authorities to determine the cause of this deadly disaster.

Firefighters responded to reports of an explosion just before early morning on West Bristol Street.

Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered three collapsed row houses engulfed in flames, with extensive damage to surrounding properties and vehicles.

The violent blast was felt throughout the neighborhood, awakening residents with what many described as a thunderous boom.

Philadelphia Fire Department’s executive officer Daniel McCarty confirmed one fatality at the scene.

“The biggest thing is the stability of the surrounding houses, making sure that this hazard doesn’t spread,” McCarty said.

He added, “This will be an extensive, all-day operation for the Philadelphia fire department.”

A search-and-rescue dog helped locate the deceased victim buried in the rubble. Two additional victims were pulled from the debris and rushed to local hospitals, with one in stable condition and the other reported to be in critical condition.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released as authorities work to notify their families.

“After pulling through some of the rubble, we were able to find that we actually did have a victim that was in the collapse. It was also determined that the victim at that point had deceased in the collapse,” a Philadelphia police official confirmed.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker visited the hospital to offer support to the injured survivors and their families, stating:

“Philadelphia, we want to ask that you lift them up in prayer. To all of the families, we are lifting you up in prayer, and the City of Philadelphia will remain here and on the scene to ensure that anyone who has been directly or indirectly impacted receives the support and services they need.”

Approximately 10 homes have been evacuated, and a temporary emergency shelter has been established for displaced residents.

Moreover, the Philadelphia Gas Works and PICO (Philadelphia Industrial Correction Center) are assisting with the investigation.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has also deployed agents to help determine the cause of the explosion.

Residents described the terrifying moment when the explosion occurred.

“I’m sitting down in the living room watching TV and all of a sudden, I hear like a ‘boom,'” a resident said.

As search and rescue operations continue, authorities are working to secure the area and prevent further collapse of damaged structures.

The investigation is expected to take several days as investigators meticulously examine the blast site for evidence that might reveal whether this was a preventable tragedy.

Officials urge anyone with information about unusual conditions in the area prior to the explosion to contact the Philadelphia Fire Department or Police Department immediately.
