(GoRealNewsNow.com) – Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D) received bad news after she revealed that she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and anticipates that her treatment might cause her to be “occasionally absent” from Congress.

74-year-old Jackson Lee, who overcame a primary challenge in March after an unsuccessful bid for Houston’s mayor late last year, remains hopeful about her recovery.

“My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer,” she stated.

“I am currently undergoing treatment to battle this disease that impacts tens of thousands of Americans every year,” she added.

She further said that she was confident that her doctors had developed the best possible plan to target her specific disease. She also mentioned that the road ahead will not be easy, but she will stand in faith that God will strengthen her.

Moreover, as a long-standing member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Jackson Lee has served in Congress since 1995. She is the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee subcommittee on crime.

She staved off an intraparty challenge from former congressional intern Amanda Edwards, capturing 60% of the votes cast in the overwhelmingly liberal district.

Her primary victory set the stage for her to run for re-election against Republican Lana Centonze in November when her opponent’s party will try to hold on to a thin majority in the US House.

Jackson Lee assured that she would be present for the most critical votes during her treatment.

“I am committed to working with our Congressional Leadership including Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Speaker of the House to serve this nation and be present for votes on legislation that is critical for the prosperity and security of the American people,” she said.

“By God’s grace, I will be back to full strength soon,” she concluded.
