However, Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) came to Fauci’s defense and prompted House Oversight and Accountability Select Subcommittee Chairman Representative Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) to reprimand Greene.
Fauci, who emerged as the foremost figure of the administration’s COVID-19 response strategy while leading the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, testified before the Republican-dominated committee, which marked his first appearance since his retirement.
During her allotted time for questioning, the Georgia Republican declined to address Fauci as a “doctor” and opted instead for the more informal “Mr. Fauci.”
This prompted Greene to ask, “Do you think that’s appropriate? Do the American people deserve to be abused like that, Mr. Fauci, because you’re not ‘Dr.,’ you’re ‘Mr. Fauci’ in my few minutes,” she said.
Her line of inquiry centered on the requirement for children to wear masks in schools during the pandemic and the implementation of the 6-foot social distancing guidelines in numerous public spaces to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
Additionally, Raskin swiftly registered an objection, inquiring, “Just in terms of the rules of decorum, are we allowed to deny that a doctor is a doctor just because we don’t want him to be a doctor?”
“Yes, because in my time, that man does not deserve to have a license. As a matter of fact, it should be revoked, and he belongs in jail,” Greene responded.
Wenstrup subsequently reprimanded Greene, declaring in a raised voice that “the gentlelady will suspend” and directing her to recognize Fauci’s medical credentials.
Moreover, Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA) also expressed his disapproval of Greene’s refusal to address Fauci with the appropriate title.
He stressed that it was completely unacceptable to deny Dr. Fauci, who was there here, a respected member of the medical community, his title.
In response, Greene asserted that Fauci was “not respected” and reiterated her refusal to address him as “doctor.” Wenstrup then exhorted all committee members to abide by the rules of decorum and to exercise caution in their remarks.
