(GoRealNewsNow.com) – A Clackamas County jury in Oregon convicted a so-called independent journalist on a charge of rioting and second-degree disorderly conduct because of her ties to Antifa.

Alissa Azar’s conviction stems from a 2021 incident at Clackamette Park in Oregon City.

However, a local media outlet reported that the jury could not reach a verdict on an additional charge of unlawful use of mace.

Azar gained a significant online following for her detailed livestream coverage of Portland’s 2020 social justice protests. The five-day trial examined the evolving role of press freedoms in the digital age.

The incident occurred on June 18, 2021, during a voter registration and flag-waving event organized by a Republican state house candidate, where groups allegedly identified as Antifa and Proud Boys clashed.

Footage from the scene, including police drone video, showed participants from both sides engaging in physical altercations.

Moreover, Clackamas County Deputy District Attorney Josh Cutino argued that the Antifa group came ready for a fight, while video evidence showed Azar charging at a woman in a sundress and spraying her with a chemical agent.

In the courtroom, video footage displayed a voice from Azar’s group yelling, “Mace the female!”

Prosecutors also pointed to explosive devices found at the scene and Azar’s social media posts calling for a counter-demonstration, which they said indicated a planned confrontation.

The defense claimed that Azar was simply doing her job as a journalist, documenting the events as they happened.

In turn, Azar has had numerous legal issues in the past, as she was charged with second-degree disorderly conduct and interfering with a peace officer after participating in an Antifa riot in downtown Portland in March 2021.

Additionally, she faced charges in December 2022, including felony robbery, assault, tampering with evidence, theft, and other serious offenses, related to her alleged attack on a citizen journalist in downtown Portland in August 2022.

By May 2024, Azar was charged again after a pro-Hamas riot at the Portland State campus.
