Today, Trump’s focus shifts to crime and immigration with the theme “Make America Safe Once Again,” as immigration is a hot-button issue for Republicans, who have blamed the crisis on Joe Biden’s “open borders.”
This comes after Trump kicked off Monday by announcing Ohio senator JD Vance as his running mate, ending months of speculation. After officially securing the nomination, Trump made a surprise appearance at Fiserv Forum in the evening, bringing the crowd to its feet.
While Trump has called for the deportation of 15 to 20 million illegals if he wins re-election, JD Vance (R-OH) echoed this stance in a Monday interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“We have to deport people,” Vance told Hannity. “We have to deport people who broke our laws who came in here. And I think we need to start with the violent criminals.”
Moreover, Trump showed up with a bandage over his injured ear while several speakers expressed relief and gratitude that the GOP candidate survived the attack, which resulted in the deaths of one rally attendee and the gunman.
“Two days ago, evil came for the man we admire and love so much,” said hard-right congresswoman MTG. “I thank God that his hand was on President Trump.”
In addition, the speaker lineup for Tuesday is still unclear, but several Republican lawmakers and Trump’s family members, including Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, are expected to speak.
Meanwhile, Biden and his allies are resuming campaign communications after pausing anti-Trump ads in response to the assassination attempt.
In an NBC News interview with Lester Holt that aired Monday evening, Biden defended his re-election bid and acknowledged it was a “mistake” to say Trump should be Democrats’ “bullseye.”
“I meant focus on him. Focus on what he’s doing. Focus on – on his – on his policies. Focus on the number of lies he told in the debate,” Biden claimed.
