(GoRealNewsNow.com) – In an exciting and remarkable discovery, researchers in Spain found extraordinary ancient islands that sank into the ocean millions of years ago.
According to the Live Science report, some of these islands still have signs of intact beaches.
The paper detailed that such findings were made on a seamount, an underwater mountain located off the east coast of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.
Moreover, scientists from the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME-CSIC) discovered these features while exploring the seabed as part of their Atlantis project, which studies underwater volcanic activity in the area.
The project head, Luis Somoza, wrote in an email to Live Science, “This could be the origin of the Atlantis legend.”
The team identified beaches, cliffs, and sand dunes on the seamount’s flat summit, which suggests that these islands were once above water.
Somoza also explained that these islands likely emerged during the last ice age when sea levels were much lower, only to sink again as the ice age ended.
Additionally, the discovery has sparked interest in a possible link between these sunken islands and the legend of Atlantis.
The researchers plan to analyze samples collected from Los Atlantes to determine when the islands began to sink and will return to the Canary Islands for more research next year.
