Located in the basement of a tall building in Istanbul, The Masquerade Club was closed during the day for renovations. However, according to Istanbul governor Davut Gül, the fire erupted shortly after noon.

Likewise, the Governor indicated that the victims were likely involved in the renovation work being carried out at the club.

In connection with the fire, arrest warrants have been issued for eight individuals, including the nightclub manager and a renovation supervisor. While three have been apprehended, others remain at large as investigations progress.

Emergency responders, which included firefighters, surrounded the club’s charred entrance, situated beneath a 16-story residential building in Istanbul’s Gayrettepe district.

Throughout the afternoon, the number of casualties steadily rose, with updates from the governor’s office.

Istanbul’s recently re-elected Mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, revealed that the club had not obtained the necessary construction permit for renovations.

Furthermore, he expressed condolences to the victims’ families on social media, stating, “There is no application [to the local municipality] for a renovation or a construction regarding the place and as it was two floors down from the ground level, it [the work] wasn’t visible.”

He continued, “May God have mercy on our citizens who lost their lives, and I wish a speedy recovery to our injured.”

Turkey’s President, Rеcep Tayyip Erdogan, was informed about the tragic incident following a conversation with Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
