(GoRealNewsNow.com) – Eight people have been killed, many or all illegal immigrants, and at least six others have been injured after a car rammed a crowd at a bus stop near a migrant and homeless shelter in Brownsville, Texas.
The incident was captured on surveillance video showing a Range Rover plowing through a group of people.
You can watch the video at the conclusion of this post. WARNING: The video is very graphic and disturbing.
According to CNN, the driver hit a curb some 30 feet from where many migrants were sitting and then lost control of the vehicle.
The incident occurred at about 8:30 am on Sunday at a bus stop across from Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center, a shelter for homeless and illegal immigrants.
Initial comments by Lt. Martin Sandoval of the Brownsville Police Department said seven people perished and six were hospitalized with various injuries, Valley Central News reported. One of those wounded later passed away.
Sandoval said the driver was arrested and charged with reckless driving. The police are investigating whether the ramming was intentional, with detectives believing that was more likely to be the case.
“We have never seen something like this,” Ozanam Center Director Victor Maldonado told KRGV, a CNN affiliate.
According to Maldonado, there were some 20-25 migrants at the bus stop at the time of the incident.
They had come to the shelter the previous day and were all citizens of Venezuela.
The driver has only been identified as a “Hispanic man.” He also suffered some injuries and received medical care.
“I’ve got a staff (member) who is in shock,” Maldonado said, adding that he, too, was in shock after he and a colleague ran to the bus stop immediately after the incident.
“I could hear the car hitting people and the thumping, and I saw how the SUV rolled over when he hit them,” Jose Del Transito Rubio Armijo, a witness, told KRGV in Spanish.
According to the police, some witnesses saw the driver ignore a red light before plowing into the bus stop crowd. The FBI is assisting in the investigation.
Sandoval said witnesses first detained the driver at the scene until the police arrived. He added the suspected had given the investigators different names and had been uncooperative.
Brownsville, a city of nearly 200,000 on the southern tip of Texas, is almost 95% Hispanic or Latino.
