On Tuesday, a report by The Wall Street Journal cited “sources familiar” with the probe claiming that the US Justice Department special counsel had nearly completed it.

Smith is handling two DOJ investigations into Trump, including one about an alleged roughly 100 classified documents seized by the FBI in a raid on his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida on August 8, 2022.

The other probe is looking into whether Trump tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

According to the WSJ, “Close associates of the former president are ‘bracing’ for an indictment in the classified documents probe.

If the newspaper’s forecast materializes, that will be the second indictment of Trump after he was charged with falsifying business records by Manhattan’s Democrat DA Alvin Bragg earlier this year.

Bragg’s indictment involves claims that the 45th president of the United States bribed a porn actress to cover up an affair he allegedly had with her.

The Journal reveals that prosecutors from Smith’s team have interviewed employees at Trump’s mansion, including “political aides, maids, and maintenance staff.”

The FBI raid of Trump’s home in Palm Beach, Florida, executed a search warrant for classified material demanded by the National Archives, which Trump reportedly took from the White House after leaving in January 2021.

“After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate. Such an assault could only take place in broken, Third-World Countries,” he commented at the time, stressing it was meant to prevent him from running for president again.

Trump is presently the frontrunner for the 2024 presidential nomination of the Republican Party.

Months after the FBI raid, President Joe Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith as special prosecutor to investigate the classified documents case and Trump’s alleged role in the US Capitol’s January 6, 2021 breach.

“Based on recent developments, including the former president’s announcement that he is a candidate for president in the next election, and the sitting President [Joe Biden’s] stated intention to be a candidate as well, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint a special counsel,” Garland declared in November 2022 as he appointed Smith.

“Such an appointment underscores the Department’s commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters. It also allows prosecutors and agents to continue their work expeditiously, and to make decisions indisputably guided only by the facts and the law,” Biden’s AG added.

A Newsmax report notes that while the classified documents probe into Trump seems “wrapping,” the Justice Department had not commented on a separate investigation into Joe Biden’s alleged mishandling of classified documents from when he was Obama’s vice president.
