(GoRealNewsNow.com) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued an apocalyptic warning to humanity because of climate change, declaring that the “climate time bomb is ticking.”
Gutteres warning that “humanity is on thin ice” came during a speech on Monday after the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published an alarming report.
The “synthesis report” by the panel looked into the impact that humanity has on climate change and the action recommended to reverse it.
“Humanity is on thin ice, and the ice is melting fast,” the UN administration chief stated in a recorded address.
“Humans are responsible for virtually all global heating over the last 200 years. The rate of temperature rising in the last half century is the highest in 2,000 years,” he added.
“Concentrations of carbon dioxide are at their highest in at least two million years. The climate time bomb is ticking,” Gutteres elaborated.
He declared that humanity would have to make a “quantum leap in climate action” to reverse the course of climate change.
However, he also argued that this was possible if all nations took the needed economic and social action to alleviate humanity’s impact on climate.
The UN Secretary-General warned that developed countries should stop utilizing fossil fuels as soon as possible as they should strive to have no net emissions by 2040.
Guterres described the IPCC report, which saw multiple international scientists work through years of extensive research, as a “survival guide for humanity” that policymakers should use as a baseline.
Fox News reported that the finding of the IPCC scientists now outlined in the 37-page document would be used as the basis for international negotiations within the Paris Climate Accord.
The new UN climate change report points out that emissions of greenhouse gases have grown because of “unsustainable energy use, land use and land-use change, lifestyles, and patterns of consumption and production.”
The document concludes that the globe must cut its carbon emissions in half to prevent surpassing the warming threshold of 2.7 degrees F (1.5 degrees Celsius).
It warns further that unless greenhouse gas emissions are slashed tremendously, the Earth will surpass the warming limit soon, possibly as early as 2035.
Earlier this month, President Joe Biden commented along the same line as the UN Secretary-General.
“If we don’t keep the temperature from going above 1.5 degrees Celsius, raised, then we’re in real trouble,” Biden said on The Daily Show.
“That whole generation is damned. That’s not hyperbole. Really truly in trouble,” the president added.
During a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee in January, Biden argued that climate change is a more significant threat than a potential nuclear war.
