The severity of his crime has shaken the nation, demonstrating once again the enduring clash between justice served and debated clemency, as his execution in 2024 marks Missouri’s fourth this year.
In November 2007, the community of Stella, Missouri, was shocked by Rowan Ford’s disappearance, alerted through an Amber Alert.
Her lifeless body was eventually discovered in a cave, hidden by Collings.
Collings, once referred to by Ford as “Uncle Chris,” confessed to both kidnapping and murdering her, despite his defense’s claims of a brain abnormality and past childhood abuse.
During the legal proceedings, further revelations about his accomplice stirred additional turmoil.
Rowan’s stepfather, David Spears, also admitted to involvement in the crime but accepted a plea for significantly lesser charges.
This leniency has prompted many to question the disparities in their punishments.
Spears served just over seven years, leaving many with unresolved questions about justice.
“To anyone that I have hurt in this life I am sorry. I hope that you are able to get closure and move on,” Christopher Collings in a statement, cited by People.
Collings faced his execution by lethal injection in Bonne Terre, Missouri, conveying remorse in his final moments.
His apology aimed at achieving closure for those he had hurt could do little to mend the hearts he had shattered.
Missouri Governor Mike Parsons affirmed, “Mr. Collings has received every protection afforded by the Missouri and United States Constitutions, and Mr. Collings’ conviction and sentence remain for his horrendous and callous crime. The State of Missouri will carry out Mr. Collings’ sentence according to the Court’s order and deliver justice.”
The execution concludes 17 years of legal back-and-forths since his first admission.
Governor Parsons, reflecting on the conclusion of this grim chapter, expressed a hope for peace for those close to Rowan.
Despite the state’s firm conclusion, some continue to express dissatisfaction, asserting the punishment was not commensurate with the crime.
Rowan Ford, remembered affectionately as a bubbly fourth grader, deserved a future far kinder than her tragic end.
His fate was sealed when the U.S. Supreme Court turned aside an appeal and the governor denied clemency.
