The survey by pollster Morning Consult published on Tuesday discovered that 61% of potential Republican primary voters favor the 45th president of the United States for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination.
Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis, remained second with 18% support. DeSantis has not announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican nomination despite expectations he would do so in May.
The new poll shows Trump’s lead in a potential primary race has widened by two points in a week after the previous Morning Consult survey had him at 60% support compared with 19% for DeSantis.
Thus, the 43-point lead is the biggest the former president has seen in the pollster’s “2024 GOP Primary Tracker,” Breitbart News reports.
According to the new survey, no other official or potential GOP bidder polled in the double digits.
Former Vice President Mike Pence remains third with 6% support among Republican primary voters.
Former South Carolina Governor and US Ambassador Nikki Haley and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy each garner 4% support.
Former US Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, an anti-Trump Republican, came in fifth with 2% support.
Three other official or possible bidders – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, US Senator Tim Scott, and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson – each polled at 1%.
The survey also found that nearly half of Trump and DeSantis supporters favor the potential rival candidate as their second choice for the GOP nomination.
Thus, 44% of Trump supporters picked DeSantis as a second choice, 15% chose Mike Pence, 10% went for Ramaswamy, and 5% selected Haley.
Among DeSantis supporters, 43% said their second choice was Trump, 15% picked Mike Pence, 13% favored Nikki Haley, and 9% preferred Ramaswamy.
Morning Consult also surveyed hypothetical general election matchups between the top-performing GOP candidates and President Joe Biden.
Its results showed that Biden leads Trump by 44% to 41% in a potential 2020 election rematch, with 9% saying they would vote for another candidate and 6% saying they were unsure about their preference.
In a Biden – DeSantis matchup, Biden still prevailed by 43% to 41%, as 10% percent supported another candidate while 6% remained undecided.
For the Republican portion of the poll, Morning Consult surveyed 3,571 potential GOP primary voters. It has a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
For the second portion, it polled about 6,000 registered voters, with a margin of error of 1%.
