(GoRealNewsNow.com) – The nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is struggling with a new spike in homicides, as its top police official has revealed murder suspects are usually arrested multiple times before they commit a killing.
In a press conference in Washington on Monday, Police Chief Robert Contee disclosed that the average suspect in a homicide case had been arrested 11 times before their arrest for perpetrating a murder.
Contee thus emphasized the problem of repeat criminal offenders in the nation’s capital. The DC police chief also pointed out that the perpetrators of homicides had to face lengthy sentences.
“The average homicide suspect has been arrested 11 times prior to them committing a homicide. That is a problem,” stated the head of the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department.
“What we gotta do, if we really want to see homicides go down, is keep bad guys with guns in jail. Because when they are in jail, they can’t be in the community shooting people,” he added.
“So when people talk about, ‘What we going to do different’ or ‘What we should do different’ or ‘What we need to do different,’ that’s the thing that we need to do different, we need to keep violent people in jail,” Contee elaborated.
His remarks came after it became clear that since the beginning of 2023, the nation’s capital has seen a 31-percent spike in the number of homicides compared to last year.
In all of 2022, Washington, DC, had 203 homicides. Last year saw a slight decrease in murder cases in the capital after steady spikes in the preceding years.
Contee’s comments also occurred against the backdrop of political controversy in the US Congress as it considered changes to the century-old criminal code of Washington, DC.
In a vote scheduled for Wednesday, the US Senate was expected to reject reforms to the District of Columbia’s criminal code, which was last amended in 1901, points out an ABC News report.
Data from the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department shows that violent crime was slightly lower last year, but overall reported crime increased by 25%.
“We want to keep bad guys off the street and keep them from getting guns in their hands. If we can do those things, we’ll see a reduction in homicides in the city,” Contee declared before reporters.
Muriel Bowser, the Democrat Mayor of Washington, DC, “acknowledged a recent scourge of shooting deaths” but at the same time was “echoing Contee’s determined outlook” at the press conference, according to the ABC News report.
“We start this year in a tough spot with shootings and homicides. But I assure you that we’re going to use all the resources at our disposal,” she said.
