(GoRealNewsNow.com) – Imprisoned for the 1994 murders of her two sons, a killer mom wants to be out as she claimed she just wants people to let her live her life because she already paid for what she did.
Susan Smith is set for a parole hearing in six weeks.
Her family stated she had at least four key points to argue in her bid for release, one of which is her mostly good behavior while incarcerated.
Even though experts doubt her parole bid will succeed, Susan Smith remains hopeful. “I think it’s time,” she told one of her jailhouse suitors. “I’ve paid my debt. I deserve to be released. I’m no longer a danger to anyone. Just let me live my life.”
“She believes she might be a free woman in less than two months,” a relative said “And she’s hoping that [the parole hearing] will go her way. She’s put all her hopes in that basket, and she’s manifesting her freedom.”
The 52-year-old mom plans to argue that growing up in a sexually abusive home warped her sense of right and wrong.
“She has a different moral compass than other people, because of her trauma. It really did a number on her,” the relative added.
Another point Smith plans to raise is that she was not in her right mind as a young mom and may have had an undiagnosed mental illness.
Smith was 22 when she let her car roll into John D. Long Lake, with her sons—3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander—strapped inside. She watched as her car sank into the lake, drowning both boys.
“I am not the monster society thinks I am,” she wrote to reporters 2015. “Something went very wrong that night. I was not myself. There was no motive as it was not even a planned event. I was not in my right mind.”
Lastly, she will argue that she has turned her life around in prison, as records show she has held a steady job and has not had any disciplinary issues in nearly a decade.
However, Smith has had previous infractions for possessing narcotics, including incidents in 2010 and 2015.
The father of the murdered boys, David Smith, plans to oppose her parole. In a recent interview, he claimed he would either write to the parole board or make a speech against her release. “I’m going to remind them what she did and who the victims were in this case,” David said.
Susan Smith has been incarcerated at Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina, for over two decades after the murders.
Initially, she told police a black man had carjacked her and kidnapped the boys, sparking a manhunt in predominantly African American neighborhoods.
Smith and her then-husband went on national TV daily, pleading for their children’s safe return.
Nine days later, the killer mom confessed that there was no carjacker and that she had drowned her sons.
Her alleged motive: she was having an affair with a wealthy man who did not want kids. The car was pulled from the lake, with the boys still strapped in their car seats.
Still, she was convicted of murder but spared the death penalty, receiving life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
