(GoRealNewsNow.com) – Conservative US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas intends to correct his financial disclosure papers after it emerged he didn’t disclose a nearly 10-year-old property deal he made with a Republican “mega-donor,” according to a report.
That report by ProPublica, a left-wing news outlet, revealed that in 2014, Justice Thomas made a real estate deal with Texas-based construction magnate Harlan Crow but failed to report it.
A source close to the Supreme Court justice told CNN that Thomas planned to change his financial disclosure forms to reflect the deal.
ProPublica says 74-year-old Thomas has received gifts such as yacht trips from billionaire Harlan Crow for decades.
The 2014 deal that remained unreported saw Thomas sell three properties in Georgia for a combined total of more than $130,000. One of those properties is the house where the justice’s 94-year-old mother resides.
Last week, Crow, 74, told CNN in a statement that he bought the properties to establish one day “a public museum at the Thomas home dedicated to telling the story of our nation’s second black Supreme Court Justice.”
According to CNN’s source, the justice thought there was no need to reveal the 2014 property transaction since he lost money through it.
Last week, Thomas defended the trips that he and his wife Ginni Thomas took with Crow and his wife.
The conservative Supreme Court justice stated he was advised he wasn’t obliged to report “personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the Court.”
The source emphasized that Thomas always filled out his financial disclosure forms with help from aides, and the failure to report the real estate deal with Harlan Crow was not an oversight. According to ProPublica’s report, Crow has donated the Republican Party over $10 million in publicly disclosed political contributions and has been a proponent of shifting the judiciary “to the right.”
Some two dozen Democrat members of the US Congress led by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia have demanded that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts start an investigation into Thomas’s dealings with Crow.
They also urged the Judicial Conference, which makes policy decisions for the federal courts, to refer Thomas to the US attorney general to probe whether the former has violated the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.
“There is at least reasonable cause to believe that Justice Thomas intentionally disregarded the disclosure requirement to report the sale of his interest in the Savannah properties in an attempt to hide the extent of his financial relationship with Crow,” Whitehouse and Johnson declared in a joint statement.
Some Democrat lawmakers, such as far-left progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), have called for Thomas’s impeachment.
