(GoRealNewsNow.com) – Following the recent harrowing school shooting in Georgia, a 16-year-old high school student has been arrested for shooting a classmate in a bathroom.
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) reported that the incident took place at Joppatowne High School in Maryland.
A School Resource Officer assigned to the high school was on-site at the time of the shooting and “immediately responded to identify and address the threat,” the HCSO said.
Officials arrived at the school “within two minutes” and began searching for the suspect and any potential victims.
“Students evacuated a 15-year-old Joppatowne High School student suffering from a gunshot wound from the interior of the school to the school entry where school nurses, staff, and students provided care and support,” the press release reported.
The 15-year-old victim Warren Curtis Grant was flown by helicopter to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Detectives started canvassing the area after identifying a person of interest, as there was a report of “a suspicious subject attempting to break into a house,” the press release stated.
Nearby deputies, who were already searching for the suspect, responded quickly and took 16-year-old Jaylen Rushawn Prince into custody shortly after without incident.
Furthermore, Prince is being charged as an adult with murder, use of a firearm, and first and second-degree assault. He is currently held at the local detention center, awaiting his first court appearance.
“The events leading up to the incident and the relationship between the victim and the suspect remain under investigation,” the press release noted.
It added, “However, information indicates Mr. Grant and Mr. Prince were known to each other prior to the shooting.”
At the moment, officials believe there are no other suspects at large and that there is no ongoing threat to the school or the local community.
