This alarming incident exposes vulnerabilities in the protective measures of one of America’s most secure buildings.
The arrest calls attention to the urgent need for stringent security protocols to prevent potential future threats.
James A. Faber, 27, was apprehended after carrying a handgun during a U.S. Capitol tour.
Capitol police discovered the weapon concealed in Faber’s waistband near the Library of Congress.
Despite no direct threat to Congress, the situation has prompted widespread calls for stricter security measures.
Faber faces multiple charges, including carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and resisting arrest, ABC News reports.
Police in Carlisle, Massachusetts, had previously alerted Washington authorities about Faber due to concerning social media posts.
U.S. Secret Service and D.C. Metropolitan Police previously interviewed him at a hotel, but no weapon was found at that time.
Before his arrest, Faber passed through a Capitol Police magnetometer, which alarmed, but was allowed into the Capitol Visitor Center after a secondary search.
This lapse in procedural protocol underscores the need for a comprehensive review.
“An officer performed a secondary hand search, and the man was let into the building” – U.S. Capitol Police announced.
On the day of the incident, a 9mm handgun was found on Faber outside the Library of Congress.
He is currently facing several charges, with his case now in the hands of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The officer who allowed Faber past the screening is suspended pending an investigation.
This failure highlights the necessity for constant vigilance and accountability within the Capitol Police’s ranks.
“The officer is suspended while the USCP’s Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting an administrative investigation into the officer’s performance of that search,” the Capitol police said further.
Capitol Police acknowledge the absence of any intentions to harm Congress yet demand accountability by enforcing strict protocols.
