(GoRealNewsNow.com) – Members of a combined New York City Police Department-federal task force fatally shot a violent armed man inside a Manhattan eyeglasses shop after a “violent struggle.”

According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny during a press briefing, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Devon Allen, was shot at least three times after wielding a gun inside Maximeyes Optical in Chelsea.

Allen, wanted for an assault earlier this month, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead, Chief Kenny informed.

An NYPD lieutenant, NYPD detective, and a Homeland Security investigator were patrolling the nearby locality when they spotted the suspect outside the establishment.

“The male then fled into this commercial establishment that he was standing in front of. While inside the store, members of the task force attempted to place him under arrest and a violent struggle ensued,” Kenny said.

He added, “[T]he male produced a gun and members of the task force discharged their weapons several times, striking the male.”

During the altercation, one task force member suffered a head injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Likewise, a 40-caliber Bersa firearm, purportedly carried by the suspect, was found at the scene.

According to law enforcement sources, authorities had been pursuing Allen since he allegedly assaulted a deli worker with a jelly jar during an altercation in early April.

Records indicate he had previously served time in upstate New York for attempted murder from 2018 to 2020.

“He is very familiar with law enforcement in this community,” remarked Kenny, who added that police would investigate if the suspect were part of a gang.
