NBC News received confirmation from two individuals knowledgeable about the investigation that Smith had issued a target letter to Trump about the case.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
When asked for a response, Smith’s spokesperson chose not to comment.
A court hearing regarding the criminal case related to the classified documents is scheduled for Tuesday in a Florida federal court.
The lawyers representing Trump have requested that any trial related to this case be postponed until after the 2024 election. However, Smith’s prosecutors are against this proposal.
In a separate case, Trump is also being investigated by a state prosecutor in Georgia for his efforts to convince election officials in that state to overturn his loss to Biden.
