(GoRealNewsNow.com) – American auto giant General Motors is recalling over 90,000 Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles due to a dangerous transmission defect that can cause the wheels to lock up and potentially cause crashes.

The recall affects multiple high-end models, including Cadillac sedans and the iconic Chevrolet Camaro, highlighting yet another quality control issue from a major U.S. manufacturer.

The massive recall targets vehicles equipped with GM’s 10-speed transmission system, specifically the 2020-2021 Cadillac CT4 and CT5, 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6, and 2020-2022 Chevrolet Camaro models.

According to federal regulators, the problem stems from premature wear of the transmission control valve that can lead to dangerous driving conditions, including harsh gear shifting and potential front wheel lock-ups that could cause accidents.

While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that only about 1% of the 90,081 recalled vehicles have the defect, the potential danger was serious enough to prompt action.

The issue emerged after a 2021 Cadillac CT5 owner reported experiencing front tire lock-up, prompting initial investigations.

“In rare cases, the wheels may experience a momentary lock up,” NHTSA warned in their recall notice.

“This recall only involves vehicles equipped with the 10-speed transmission. Vehicles equipped with other transmissions are not affected by this recall,” the agency confirmed in its statement.

In a troubling development that raises questions about GM’s initial response to the safety issue, the company originally closed its investigation despite the serious nature of the problem.

Officials claimed the brief duration of lock-ups and apparent lack of accidents did not warrant further action.

However, GM was forced to reopen the investigation in November after 115 additional lock-up reports surfaced, one of which resulted in an accident.

It was not until February 27 that GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority finally decided a safety recall was necessary – months after the problem was first identified and potentially putting thousands of drivers at risk during that delay.

GM claimed that customer safety remains a priority. “The safety of our customers is the highest priority for the entire GM team,” the automaker stated.

They added, “working to remedy this matter through a software update as quickly as possible.”

In the meantime, affected vehicle owners will receive a mail notification about the recall in mid-April.

The fix involves installing new transmission control module monitoring software at no cost. This software update will place the transmission into fifth gear when necessary to prevent dangerous lock-ups until the next key cycle.

GM has reportedly incorporated new transmission control software in their newer models, including the 2021 Cadillac CT6, 2022 Cadillac CT4 and CT5, and 2023 Chevrolet Camaro.

The recall serves as another reminder of the ongoing quality control challenges facing American automakers while highlighting the critical importance of prompt action when safety defects are identified.
