Additionally, seven individuals aged between 16 and 29, with most being men and three women, were injured.

Initially, MPD reported 16 victims, which included the two dead, but later revised it to eight total victims, and another victim was found on Sunday.

According to MPD interim Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis, the shooting occurred around 7:19 p.m. Saturday during a block party hosted without a permit where 200 to 300 people attended.

The city required permits and a fee of $25 for events that would not affect traffic and $5 if traffic would be impacted and streets needed to be closed.

It also required a park lease agreement if the event was in a city park like Orange Mound Park.

MPD encouraged anyone with information or video footage to contact CrimeStoppers anonymously and they have upped the reward for arrest-related information to $15,000.

Moreover, a video circulating on social media, purportedly captured moments before the shooting, showed a car performing stunts on what looked like a basketball court.

Gunshots rang out midway through the video, which prompted attendees to flee and seek cover.

Following the incident, Memphis-Shelby County Schools emphasized the need for better protection of young Memphians and expressed condolences to the Orange Mound community.

Present at Orange Mound Park during the incident, Memphis Mayor Paul Young condemned gun violence and stressed the necessity of collective action to end it, calling for unity and resolve in addressing the ongoing issue.
